Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her support for eliminating the 60-vote filibuster requirement in order to reinstate Roe v. Wade, a landmark decision that would federalize abortion access nationwide. The filibuster, a Senate rule allowing a minority to block legislation pending a supermajority vote, has been a significant hurdle in passing laws related to abortion rights.
In an interview, Harris stated, 'I think we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe and get us to the point where 51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom.' She emphasized the importance of individuals being able to make decisions about their own bodies without government interference.
These remarks were made during Harris's campaign visit to a battleground state, where she also highlighted the significance of maintaining a Democratic majority in the Senate and regaining control of the House.
Notably, Harris has previously supported ending the filibuster to pass progressive legislation, such as the Green New Deal climate initiative. She reiterated her commitment to codifying Roe v. Wade and passing key voting rights legislation with just two more Senate seats.
'Our President, Joe Biden, has been clear about his stance on outdated Senate rules obstructing important issues,' Harris stated. 'As vice president and president of the Senate, I eagerly anticipate casting the deciding vote to break the filibuster on voting rights and reproductive rights.'
Harris's advocacy for eliminating the filibuster to protect abortion rights underscores her dedication to advancing key Democratic priorities and ensuring access to reproductive healthcare for all individuals.
