Vice President Kamala Harris brought her presidential campaign to the nation's capital on Tuesday, delivering what's being billed as her closing argument address to American voters. With one week until Election Day, the vice president and Democratic presidential nominee called on Americans to ‘turn the page’ on former President Trump, the Republican nominee.
A senior Harris campaign adviser stated that the vice president's speech was optimistic and hopeful, pledging to always prioritize country and common ground above party to achieve results for all Americans. Harris argued that Trump, consumed by grievances and desire for retribution, is not focused on the needs of Americans.
The address took place at the Ellipse, a large park located just south of the White House and north of the National Mall. The choice of location held symbolic significance, with the White House serving as the backdrop where either Harris or Trump will soon succeed President Biden in the Oval Office.
Furthermore, the Ellipse was significant as Trump had headlined a rally of supporters there on Jan 6, 2021. Following the rally, many attendees marched to the U.S. Capitol and joined other protesters in storming the building in an attempt to upend congressional certification of Biden's 2020 election victory over Trump.
