Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a speech in Houston, addressing what she described as a significant assault on fundamental freedoms and rights across the nation. Speaking at a gathering of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, Harris emphasized the importance of various freedoms, including the right to vote, safety from gun violence, living without fear of bigotry and hate, openly expressing love, learning America's true history, and a woman's autonomy over her body.
Harris has been actively advocating for abortion rights following the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the US Supreme Court in 2022. She spearheaded a 'reproductive freedoms tour' earlier this year, which included a visit to an abortion clinic in Minnesota, a historic move for a sitting US president or vice president.
Her remarks in Houston came after attending a successful fundraiser in the city that raised $2.5 million. The Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, part of the Divine Nine historically Black fraternities and sororities, hosted the event. Harris herself is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, another Divine Nine sorority.
The speech highlighted Harris' commitment to defending essential rights and freedoms, particularly in the face of ongoing challenges. Her advocacy for women's reproductive rights and other critical issues underscores her dedication to promoting equality and justice.
