Vice President-Elect JD Vance Meets With Senators For Support

Senate candidate JD Vance campaigns in Boardman

Vice President-elect JD Vance has convened a meeting in the US Capitol with Matt Gaetz, Trump’s pick for attorney general, to meet with Republican senators and garner support for Gaetz's confirmation. Gaetz, who is facing allegations of misconduct, is using these meetings as an opportunity to explain why he should receive senators' backing.

The meeting is taking place in The Strom Thurmond Room, located just off the Capitol Rotunda, for security reasons. This setup allows Vance and Gaetz to meet with senators without having to move around the Capitol complex to visit their offices. Reporters and photographers are stationed outside the room, while senators are seen entering and exiting for the discussions. Video recording is prohibited within this area of the Capitol.

Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, recently left the meeting and described it as a combination of strategy sessions and Q&A sessions. He mentioned that there are upcoming votes later in the morning, which Vance may need to attend on the Senate floor. Notably, Senator Marco Rubio, who arrived at the Capitol with Gaetz and Vance, did not participate in the meeting, as confirmed by Hawley.
