Victorian authorities have released the digital composite image of a man they believe to have information on the tragic house fire that resulted in the death of 27-year-old Katie Tangey.
On January 16, 2025, Tangey was killed while house-sitting her brother’s home in Truganina after arsonists hit the wrong address in an attack that is believed to be linked to Melbourne’s ongoing tobacco wars.
In a major development, detectives from the Arson and Explosive squad have released a digital composite image of a man they’d like to speak to regarding the incident.
The image was compiled using enhanced CCTV footage from the incident.
Authorities say the man is “described as Middle Eastern in appearance, aged between 25-30 years old and with a slim build”.

“If you recognise the man in the facefit, have any knowledge of those involved or the location of the car — a dark coloured BMW X3 or X5 — I cannot implore you enough to find it in yourself to do the right thing and come forward,” Detective Inspector Chris Murray said.
In CCTV footage from the tragic incident, two people were captured leaving a dark coloured vehicle parked outside of the address just after 2am.
Shortly after, a “significant explosion” occurred while the pair left the scene.
A ring camera captured two people — with one person carrying what appeared to be a jerry can — leaving the address after the house exploded.
Tangey managed to call Triple Zero at about 2.30am. Unfortunately, the woman, alongside the family’s golden retriever, were killed in the fire.
“This is one of the most tragic incidents I have seen in my 38 years of policing. Katie Tangey was 27, she had her whole life ahead of her, and the night this occurred, she was staying away from home for the first time ever,” Inspector Murray said of the incident.
“Katie had just enough time to call Triple Zero, and she would have spent her final moments on her own, knowing she was going to die. It is an unimaginable horror I hope nobody else has to experience.”

Authorities have said “there have been a number of anonymous reports” to Crime Stoppers, including tips where a name, pseudonym or nickname was given. They’ve asked anyone who’s name-dropped in their tips to come forward.
“We know this is solvable, and we know we are getting closer. We know this because there are people out there who are talking and who are providing information,” Murray continued.
“If you know anything – no matter how small, please, make the right choice – for Katie and her family.”
Investigations into the tragic incident are continuing.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
