A Victorian man has admitted killing another, less than two weeks before he was due to face trial over the death.

Trevor Lovett, 50, on Tuesday pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Melbourne's Supreme Court.

He admitted killing Stephen Watts, 40, at Darley in Melbourne's north on August 16, 2019, the court heard.

A trial over the death, which had been listed to begin on October 17, was vacated.

Details about the killing were not aired in court, however police reports alleged Mr Watts was found dead inside a vehicle at a Deer Park shopping centre.

Lovett remains in custody and will face a plea hearing at a later date.
