Travellers to Singapore this month will be able to see the vibrant colours of the Lion City at night as the i Light Singapore Festival returns to Marina Bay from June 3-26. It's a collaboration of the Urban Redevelopment Authority and DBS Bank to raise awareness of sustainability and spark fresh perspectives on the environment and the world.
Designed around the theme "Spark Of Light", the festival will feature 20 light installations by artists from 14 countries inspired by the colour violet, which has the shortest wavelength and most powerful electromagnetic energy in the visible light spectrum, and represents the awakening of senses, similar to the spark of an idea in one's mind.
The Mother Earth Climate Change Data Sculpture will be projected on the façade of the ArtScience Museum by Turkish-based Ocuhhh Media Studio and Marina Bay Sands. It will use artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to turn publicly available environmental data from local weather recordings into a magnificent visual delight with moving lights, colours and sound to emphasise climate change challenges.
The inflatable Plastic Whale, created by Singaporean artist Craig Neo and a team from China consisting of Feng Qiao, Liao Qingshuang and Li Jianwen, will be filled with recyclable plastic bottles and scraps, gasping in distress to highlight global environmental issues.
The Underworld installation by Swedish and Argentinian artists Aleksandra Stratimirovic and Leonel Kaplan depicts an imaginary undersea settlement with giant lanterns made of discarded fishing nets set against a soundscape featuring haunting echoes of the sea to call attention to the fragility of the marine ecosystem.
At Bayfront Event Space, a 14,200m² Festival Village was created to look like local streets, showcasing Singapore's vibrant hawker and street food culture. Drone pilots, on the other hand, can gather at The Lawn at Marina Bay to demonstrate their talents by completing a neon light obstacle course. At the Experience Arena, newcomers can learn the fundamentals from skilled educators.
The festival is open Sunday to Thursday from 7.30-11pm, and Friday to Saturday from 7.30pm to midnight. Admission is free. Find out more details at ilightsingapore.gov.sg.
