Kaz Rafia DDS MBA MPH, the Chief Health Equity Officer/ EVP of Philanthropy & Health Transformation at CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, is leading efforts to address the critical need for enhanced oral health care services for the more than 18 million living veterans in the United States.
Rafia emphasizes the importance of recognizing the obligations as a nation to optimize and enhance the integrated system of care at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) as the veteran population ages and their medical needs increase.
Research indicates that veterans, especially those living below the federal poverty level, face significant disparities in accessing healthcare services due to economic barriers and lack of insurance coverage. Veterans in poverty often struggle to obtain timely and appropriate care, leading to poorer health outcomes over time.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has made strides in promoting health equity by offering eligible veterans access to affordable dental care through a voluntary dental insurance program and expanding telehealth services under the MISSION Act of 2018.
However, challenges persist, particularly for rural veterans who face barriers such as geographic isolation, limited access to providers, and shortages of healthcare professionals. These disparities are further compounded by transportation barriers and inadequate mental health services.
Advocates and organizations are urged to enhance efforts to inform veterans about available dental benefits and services provided by the VA. By conducting targeted outreach campaigns and educational initiatives, more veterans can become aware of their options for oral health care.
Efforts to broaden eligibility criteria for VA dental benefits and advocate for policy changes at the state and federal levels are essential for improving veterans' access to oral health care. Collaboration with private dental providers and organizations can further expand access to care and leverage additional resources and expertise.
By prioritizing comprehensive care for veterans and advocating for supportive policies, the U.S. can advance oral health equity for veterans nationwide, ensuring they receive the necessary care they deserve as valued community members.
