A veteran Florida meteorologist is cautioning residents to be vigilant as Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in the central part of the state soon. John Morales, the longest-serving meteorologist in south Florida, has issued a warning based on his extensive study of storm surges.
Morales emphasized that the storm surge from hurricanes like Milton can start slowly, gradually increasing in the hours leading up to landfall. However, he highlighted the critical point when the surge accelerates rapidly, catching many people off guard with shockingly rising water levels.
Aside from the storm surge, Milton is also forecasted to bring extreme winds and flash flooding due to heavy rainfall. The NBC 6 South Florida meteorologist stressed the importance of being prepared for the multiple hazards that the hurricane may bring.
