Veteran firefighter retires after 30 years

Veteran firefighter and area commander David Sharp, who’s been with the fire service for more than 30 years, is retiring this April.

David Sharp - who is the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Local Senior Officer for the West Lothian and Falkirk areas - became a firefighter in January 1992.

He served at Lochgelly and Dunfermline Fire Stations before taking on an instructor’s post at Thornton in Fife.

David has been in his current role as area commander since January 2020 - just at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said: “It’s been a privilege to serve many different communities over the past thirty years.

“I’ve had a variety of roles within the service. Being promoted to area commander and taking on the local senior officer role for West Lothian and Falkirk was a great honour.

“I retire from the service on April 15, but I will always be grateful for the experiences I’ve had over the years.”

Over his 30 years of service to the community, David has played a pivotal role in the fire service, particularly in the training of the new generation of firefighters across the East of Scotland.

He assisted in Bosnia, with the Soldiers to Saviours Programme, conducting several charitable trips to Bosnia and Kosovo with donated Fire Service engines, equipment, and providing training between 2003 and 2006.

He was later promoted to group commander to take on the training lead role for the East of Scotland in 2014.
