Mumbai, Maharashtra: Legendary actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, celebrated for his patriotic films like Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti, died today at the age of 87 in Mumbai. The actor, who had been admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, succumbed to heart-related complications. According to the medical report, decompensated liver cirrhosis was a secondary cause of death.
Born on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Kumar became a defining figure in Indian cinema, earning the moniker Bharat Kumar for his unwavering nationalist themes. His career spanned over five decades, leaving an indelible mark as an actor, director, screenwriter, and lyricist.
Manoj Kumar made his Bollywood debut with Fashion (1957) but rose to prominence with Kanch Ki Gudiya (1961). He went on to deliver timeless classics such as Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Shaheed, Hariyali Aur Rasta, and Upkar, which resonated deeply with audiences. His directorial ventures, including Kranti and Purab Aur Paschim, were lauded for their patriotic fervor and social commentary.
Recognized for his contributions, he was honored with the Padma Shri (1992) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2015). His unique storytelling and song picturizations set new benchmarks in Indian cinema.

Condolences poured in from across the country, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeting:
"Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, remembered for his patriotic zeal. His works ignited national pride and will continue to inspire generations. Om Shanti."
President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute, acknowledging his role in shaping patriotic narratives:
"His iconic characters of national heroes, farmers, and soldiers will remain etched in our collective memory. His cinema instilled pride and will inspire generations."
Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri hailed Kumar as "India’s first truly original Indic filmmaker," praising his nationalist vision. Actor Akshay Kumar recalled, "I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love for our country."
