Vet's winter grit warning for Glasgow dog owners

A vet has issued a warning over potential health problems experienced by pups as a result of winter gritting.

With temperatures taking a dip to as low as -6C in Glasgow over the past few nights, it's not only important to keep your dog warm when out and about, but also to be mindful of where they're walking.

Dozens of gritters have been deployed in a bid to to quell the winter freeze, which brought a dense winter fog over Glasgow this morning.

Salt has been applied to roads and pavements to make it safe for both cars and pedestrians to make their way around the city, but the grit itself could have hazardous consequences for our pets.

A post shared on community Facebook group Lost Dogs Glasgow, published by ICR Veterinary Surgeons in Edinburgh, warns: "Beware Dog owners. Salt and Sand is being placed on streets and walkways.

"This can cause irritation and discomfort to Dogs. In bad cases it can cause tissue dehydration and damage.

"Remember to wash your Dog’s paws with some warm water when coming back from a walk."

Last month we published advice issued by Dogs' Trust Glasgow on how to keep your dog warm and safe this winter, with specific advice for taking your pooch along gritted walkways.

They say: "Make sure you wipe your dog’s legs and feet when you come indoors after a snowy walk. The grit from the roads can irritate their feet. Grit can also be dangerous if your dog licks its paws. Again, seek veterinary advice if you are concerned your dog may have licked or ingested any."
