Vet lists five things she would never do when caring for a dog

A vet has shared five key pieces of advice for dog owners in a video which has gone viral. TikTok user @Cat_The_Vet regularly posts videos full of guidance for pet owners.

In one video, which has amassed more than 67,000 likes, Cat, a veterinarian based in the UK, has listed several things she wouldn’t do with her own dog, Mandy. Sharing her expert knowledge, she advises that fellow dog owners should consider her tips.

Your dogs’ health can be impacted by various factors including what they eat and what they play with, the Liverpool Echo reports. Some choices can even lower their life expectancy by up to two years. Read on for Cat’s top five ‘don’t’ for owning a dog.

Never throw a stick

Cat said: "The injuries that are caused by throwing sticks are horrendous. Down their mouths, into their necks, they can be super serious. Mandy will never be chasing a stick."

Never use a ball thrower

The vet said that although her dog loves tennis balls, she will never use a ball thrower to play fetch with her four-legged friend. She said: "They do incredible damage to dogs joints and the balls won't always be dog friendly ones."

Never feed them a raw food diet

Cat said: "You can feed your dog whatever you wish but for me the risk of nutritional imbalances and the risk of bacterial infections, to both her and my family, are far too great."

Never let your dog get fat

The fourth don't on Cat's list was to never let your pet get fat. She explained the health risks of obesity in dogs as she said that it can take "up to two years" off a dog's life. She added: "Not to mention the strain it puts on the joints and other parts of the body."

Always keep up to date with vaccines

The dog owner and vet said: "I do not want my dog getting really sick from preventative diseases." She advised keeping up with vaccines to keep your pet in top health.
