Vet issues colour warning to dog owners buying pet toys - with common mistake

As much as you may want to lavish your beloved dog with all the toys you can fit into your basket at the pet shop, there are a few things to bear in mind before you buy. A vet has now come forward to warn pet owners away from making an all too common mistake when treating their pooch to a well-deserved present, and it's all about seeing things through your dog's eyes.

In a video shared to TikTok, the knowledgable pet advice influencer cautioned that making this particular error, no matter how innocently, could have an impact on your dog's "overall well-being."

In the TikTok video, the helpful vet, who goes by the username @petlabco, advised: "Number one mistake, buying the wrong colour dog toys - dogs do not see colours in the same way that we do.

"Red and green colours appear greyish to them, however, they can see blue and yellow tones."

The clip has since clocked up more than 68.8K likes and counting, and pet lovers have been left absolutely baffled by what they've learned, having never considered just how differently their furry best friend sees the world around them.

One person commented: "Does anyone else's dog have a favourite colour? My dog's favourite colour is purple and she won't play with a toy that's not purple."

Another wondered: "Can they see brown? My dog's favourite toy is brown."

According to information about dogs' eyesight on the Purina website: "A dog's world is basically made up of shades of blue, yellow and grey, with red, green and orange colours missing from their spectrum.

"This is why yellow and blue toys make the biggest impression on your dog, while red balls can be left completely forgotten in the grass."

If you're looking for a toy your dog won't just end up forgetting about, it might be best to leave the brightest, reddest one in the shop, even if it's the most eye-catching one to you.
