'Very sad and depressed' cat who can't eat by himself finally gets adopted

A "very sad and depressed" cat has finally been adopted after his listing went viral.

People across the internet fell in love with Fishtopher after pictures of the slightly cross-eyed cat were posted and widely shared on social media.

Many rejoiced at the news he found his forever home.

The Domestic Short Hair & Bengal Mix had been waiting for adoption at the Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in New Jersey, US, when his adoption listing went viral.

Pleading for him to be taken, the listing read: "He is very sad and depressed and will only eat when he has company. Five year old Fishtopher was found as a stray, maybe he is missing his family."

It continued: "Fishtopher is a big cheeky boy, wouldn't you love rubbing up on those big cheeks? He loves cuddling up in arms, it seems to make him feel secure.

"We feel that Fishtopher would do best in a more quiet home. Please come rescue our big loveable boy!"

After the widely shared post, the shelter said it had received “hundreds of inquiries” about Fishtopher.

Then on Saturday November 26, Laura Folts, 22, and her partner Tanner Callahan, 24, adopted him and posting on their Facebook the shelter announced: “FISHTOPHER HAS LEFT THE BUILDING".

The couple had driven two hours from Baltimore to the adoption centre after seeing the viral post about him on Twitter.

Despite arriving an hour before it opened there were already eight or nine people waiting there to see the now-famous cat but it was Ms Folts and Mr Callahan who got to take him home.

They drove him home stopping for a pitstop on the way to make sure Fishtopher was getting the required amount of strokes.

Although he's now found his forever home with the pair, they have promised to keep his fans up to date with how he's getting on "at many peoples requests".

Fishtopher's new Twitter account already has 54,000 followers and the couple have used it to try and get other cats adopted.

Speaking after Fishtopher was adopted, the shelter announced: “We’re super happy for him, but if you were interested in him, have no fear.

"We have hundreds of other kitties who are just as wonderful and are wishing that people would come and stand in line for them."

In addition to Fishtopher, the shelter shared that 16 other animals were adopted from there this past weekend.
