'Very lucky' - Roy Keane and Ian Wright make red card claim after Liverpool beat Cardiff

Roy Keane believes that Liverpool were lucky not be be down to 10 men in their victory over Cardiff City.

The Reds claimed a 3-1 victory over the Championship outfit in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

After a goalless first half, Diogo Jota opened the scoring with a header from a Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick.

New signing Luis Diaz provided the assist for Takumi Minamino to make it 2-0, before Harvey Elliott got Liverpool’s third goal on his first match since returning from injury.

However, the match could have gone differently when there was a tackle made outside the penalty area by Caoimhin Kelleher in the opening moments of the second half.

Cardiff broke free on the counter attack, with Kelleher rushing off his line to clear the ball but fouled Mark Harris.

Referee Andrew Madley gave Kelleher a yellow card, before VAR checked for a possible red card.

The video assistant checked for the possible denial of a goalscoring opportunity, and serious foul play, but judged that no red card was needed.

After the game ITV pundits Keane and Ian Wright disagreed with the decision and felt that Kelleher should have been given his marching orders.

While both pundits thought there was no denial of a goalscoring opportunity, Keane felt that Kelleher was “lucky” not to be sent off - and Wright felt it was serious foul play.

“I think Konate probably gets round, but they (VAR) must have been looking at the challenge,” said Wright.

“The challenge is something that he probably could have got sent off for.”

Keane added: “He’s not in control, is he. He’s got very, very lucky with the sending off, and it could have been a bad injury.

“He’s got the benefit of the doubt, it’s one of those where sometimes the home team gets it. Very lucky.”

Wright concluded: “I don’t think they got it right, for the foul play he could have got sent off for that.”

Victory for Liverpool means they will go on to play Norwich City at Anfield in the fifth round, which is scheduled to be played later this month.
