'Very high' risk of wildfires warning issued for parts of Scotland – see full map

PARTS of Scotland have been warned they are at “very high” risk of wildfires over the coming days.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has issued a high-risk alert which will remain in place from Saturday, March 1, until Wednesday, March 5.

The warning of potential wildfires is the first for 2025 and includes the northern and eastern mainland of Scotland along with the islands.

Emergency services are urging people to avoid lighting fires outdoors in the under the highlighted areas during this period, as SFRS warned human behaviour is the main cause of wildfires in Scotland.

Area Commander and SFRS wildfire lead Michael Humphreys explained that due to a large volume of dead and dry vegetation across large areas of countryside can act as “fuel” for wildfires.

He said: “During any period of heightened risk, fires can ignite easily, spread very quickly, and burn with high intensity.

“At this time of year in early Spring, even when the weather is still bitterly cold in some areas, we typically have a large volume of dead, bone-dry vegetation across large areas of countryside. This essentially acts as a fuel for fire.

“There are currently vast areas that are tinder dry and vulnerable, which provides all the ingredients for fire to take hold and spread.”

Humphreys added: “Human behaviour is the cause of most wildfires in Scotland, so it is imperative we all act responsibly while enjoying the outdoors over the coming days and weeks ahead.

“By following some simple but key advice, we can significantly reduce the risk of wildfire occurring.”

SFRS have advised people to always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and have a range of safety advice for wildfire prevention which can be found here along with on its website.
