'Very harsh!' - Chelsea fans angered by Thiago Silva penalty decision in Club World Cup final

Chelsea fans believe referee Chris Beath's decision to award a penalty against Thiago Silva was 'very harsh' in the Club World Cup final versus Brazilian side Palmeiras.

After a rather dull first half, a delicious Callum Hudson-Odoi cross was met by a powerful Romelu Lukaku, who headed home his second goal of this season's Club World Cup.

However, that joy was short-lived as a long-throw from right-wing-back Roche caused havoc in the backline and Silva was adjudged to have handballed his attempted clearance in the 64th minute.

After a VAR consultation which was very quick, the decision was made and Raphael Veiga stepped up when it really mattered for his side to level the proceedings at 1-1 to the dismay of Chelsea fans who couldn't wrap their heads around the decision.

"Poor really from Thiago Silva, no need to have his arms up like that but a good penalty in the end," former manager Mark Hughes said in commentary on Channel 4.

Here's the best of the reaction on social media.

@CFCJamie_Kai tweeted: 'The ball doesn’t even touch his hand.'

@strawdogs1999 questioned: 'How is that a penalty?'

@Signsomeplayer1 delivered his three-word verdict: 'its no pen.'

@Tiaan601956924v similarly put: 'Never a pen.'

@Jushereinnit1 worries: 'So undeserved.'

@leebobo1972 pointed out: 'And we drop our best penalty saver.'

@Quebha simply put: 'Very harsh.'

After the penalty was converted, @Za3imAbo claimed: 'Kepa would have saved this.'

Thomas Tuchel will certainly have his view known when it comes around to his post-match press conference, especially if the result now swings the way of Palmeiras.
