A central Kentucky police department is offering tips to help make sure nothing really scary happens to the little ghosts and goblins Trick or Treating Tuesday night. Sergeant Kevin Estes has been a member of the Versailles Police Department for 16 years. He said his first tip is to make sure kids can be seen after dark.
“Making sure that they're in visible clothing, or if their costume happens to be something that's dark, make sure you put some reflective tape or something with some kind of luminescence to it, whether it be a glow stick or something like that, just to make sure that motorists can see them when they're out walking.”
Estes said he doesn’t know of any Trick or Treat tragedies during his time as a Versailles police officer, but he has seen some near misses while accompanying his own children.
“I have seen kids run across the road and a car have to blow their horn, because they ran right out in front of them. I've also seen incidents of cars going way too fast in the neighborhood during those Trick or Treat hours.”
Estes also says motorists need to be especially aware of neighborhood signage and slow down, and that parents should inspect their children’s treats when they get home.
