Vernon Kay says 'pain' of being punished with a ruler at school 'stays with me'

Vernon Kay has revealed he can still remember the pain of being smacked with a ruler at school as a young boy.

During Tuesday's This Morning, Vernon and his co-host Rochelle Humes invited Nick Ferrari and Camilla Tominey into the studio to discuss the latest headlines.

The conversation soon turned to the controversial story of a school America, who have decided to bring back the use of a wooden paddle as punishment for pupils.

It's been reported that during recent discussions about how to improve discipline at the schools in a small town in rural Missouri, local officials, teachers and parents called for a ban on mobile phones in classrooms and for the creation of a special academy for pupils who struggled in a traditional classroom setting.

They also decided that if all else failed, some pupils ought to be whacked with a wooden paddle.

Rochelle, 33, and Vernon, 48, were stunned at the news, especially as the parents of kids at the school had agreed on the punishment.

Vernon spoke up and recalled: "I remember getting the ruler and I think the pain still stays with me...

"They used to make you arch your hand," he continued as he demonstrated it for them, and then added: "It was just that bit there, whack!"

Camilla then asked him: "Did it stop you from being naughty though Vernon?" to which he replied: "Absolutely not!"

"He's still naughty now," Rochelle interjected before saying: "No one needs to be touching my child with a paddle, that's all I'm saying!"

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
