A Republican state lawmaker from Vermont has publicly apologized for her actions after being caught on video pouring water into a Democratic colleague's bag. The incident took place in the Statehouse in Montpelier, Vermont, involving State Rep. Mary Morrissey and State Rep. Jim Carroll, both from Bennington.
Morrissey expressed her shame and regret for her disrespectful conduct towards Carroll and issued a public apology to him, her colleagues, and the citizens of Vermont. She acknowledged the torment Carroll endured for five months due to the repeated incidents of water being poured into his bag.
Carroll revealed that his bag was soaked multiple times per week in January and February, escalating to almost daily occurrences after he returned from rehab following a DUI charge in February. He suspected Morrissey as the perpetrator and set up a video camera to capture the act, which he then presented to House Speaker Jill Krowinski.
Krowinski condemned the behavior as disturbing and emphasized the importance of upholding integrity and decorum in legislative proceedings. She assured that any actions compromising these values would be thoroughly investigated and addressed.
Despite the tension between Morrissey and Carroll, the latter expressed hope for a resolution, stating that they needed to start somewhere in rebuilding their relationship. Morrissey has not provided a reason for her actions and has not responded to requests for comment.
The incident has sparked discussions about professionalism and respect among lawmakers, highlighting the need for maintaining a civil and respectful environment within the legislative body.
