Vera's Riley Jones gives new series update as cast spotted filming in Gateshead's Metrocentre

Riley Jones has given Vera fan an update on how production is going on the new series of the hit drama, as shoppers at Gateshead's Metrocentre got a shock when they spotted them filming there on Monday.

It's now been four months since the last run of the long running ITV show came to and, with millions tuning into witness all the twists and turn of feature length series 12 finale, The Darkest Evening. There was a very worrying moment when Brenda Blethyn's famous alias fell to the ground as a gun shot was heard; but,, thankfully after the nation held its breath during the ad break, it was revealed that Vera was safe and well and is now back in action for series 13.

Filming for the next run of Vera, which has been pulling in large audiences for 12 years now, kicked off last month in Hexham, the Brenda and her co-stars also spotted on set in the likes of Wylam and North Shields Fish Quay over the last few weeks. And, at the start of a new week, the Vera team moved onto a very well known landmark in Gateshead - famous shopping mall, the Metrocentre.

While it us not known exactly what storyline led them to the Tyneside landmark, the cast's appearance at the Metrocentre sparked plenty of curiosity, with shoppers definitely not expecting to see them there. While he didn't directly mention the Metrocentre in his post, local actor Riley, who plays DC Mark Edwards, took to Twitter on Monday evening to share a photo of him together with co-stars Brenda, Jon Morrison, returning cast member David Leon and newcomer Rhiannon Clements, who has joined Vera to play DC Steph Duncan.

He captioned the black and white shot: "One down, two to go," strongly hinting that the first episode of Vera series 13 is now in the can. When ITV announced the new run, it was confirmed that there would be three parts, with another feature length story, The Rising Tide, also ready to air, having been filmed before Christmas. That will be the episode where Kenny Doughty and Ibinabo Jack will bow out of their roles.

Reacting to Riley's post, one of his followers wrote: "Wondered what was going on in the Metrocentre today," with another tweeting: "am so looking forward to the new series, can't wait, best show on the telly!"
