Vera's Kenny Doughty delights fans with news of cast reunion for 'special' episode

Kenny Doughty has got Vera fans very excited, with news of a cast reunion for a 'special' episode of the ITV drama.

Well over a decade after it first burst onto screens, adapted from the books by Tyneside-based author Ann Cleeves, the appetite for all things Vera is still as strong as ever, with fans across the world hooked on the sleuthing escapades of DCI Vera Stanhope and her colleagues.

There is still a mystery on when the last two episodes of Vera series 11 will air, with ITV still not confirming when the remaining parts will be on, after the most recent run was removed from schedules after episodes three and four. As fans wait for news, the cast and crew of Vera have been back on Tyneside and the wider North East to shoot series 12.

And now Kenny, famous to millions of viewers for being DCI Stanhope's sidekick, Aiden Healy, has let slip that the Vera team have been busy working on something else as well. Taking to Twitter on Monday, he posted: "We are back for another special episode of Vera. Day 1 in the bag… after a little break it’s been lovely to see everyone again. Old & New faces. Vera fans you’re in for a treat!"

It didn't take long for Vera fans to jump on Kenny's tweet, with one replying: "Please say ITV have finally commissioned a Vera Christmas special, the darkest evening TV adaptation yes please!" When asked him if the new series would start in January, Kenny gave a cryptic response, telling them: "Sure everything will be announced soon."

Referencing the 'mystery' of the missing episodes, another fan tweeted: "Great! We're still waiting for @ITV to show the remaining episodes from the last series. When will that be @ITV?"

There was Vera hysteria in Whitley Bay in September, when after ticket sales broke the venue's record for the fastest ever sell out, Viva Vera, featuring leading lady Brenda Blethyn and author Ann, packed out the Playhouse for a special evening of insights and Q&As.
