Vera Pauw sanctioned by NWSL and must 'accept personal responsibility' if she is to work in America in the future

Vera Pauw has been sanctioned by the NWSL and been told that she will have to 'accept personal responsibility' and meet certain conditions in order to work in the American League again.

Back in December Pauw, who managed Houston Dash in the NWSL between 2017-2018, was named in a report into misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League. Houston Dash issued an apology to its players that were subjected to the alleged misconduct by Pauw.

In an FAI press conference held before Christma, Pauw denied all allegations of misconduct. Pauw also denies accusations that she refused to cooperate with the 14 month long investigation.

On Monday evening, the NWSL released a statement that listed sanctions imposed against a number of managers, coaches and personnel associated with NWSL teams in the past.

Pauw, along with five other coaches was hit with a level three sanction, meaning their future employment in the NWSL is 'conditional.'

According to the statement, "Future employment within the league will be conditioned on the following factors being established to the satisfaction of the Commissioner in her complete discretion: acknowledging wrongdoing and accepting personal responsibility for inappropriate conduct, participating in training, and demonstrating a sincere commitment to correcting behavior."

The sanctions imposed on Pauw were the least severe of the three sanction levels.

Four coaches were hit with level one sanctions, meaning they were banned from the NWSL for life, while two other coaches were banned for two years as part of level two sanctions.

Pauw became Irish manager in 2019, her first job after her spell in Houston.

She has led Ireland to a first ever major tournament and will be in charge when the Girls in Green take to the field in the first game of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup when they take on hosts Australia.
