Venus Williams to make Wimbledon return in mixed doubles partnership with Jamie Murray

Venus Williams is set for a surprise return to Wimbledon in mixed doubles competition

Venus Williams will join sister Serena in making her Wimbledon return by teaming up with Jamie Murray in the mixed doubles.

The Anglo-American duo will make a formidable pairing – Murray has twice won the mixed doubles title at his home Grand Slam, while Williams is a six-time winner of the women’s doubles at Wimbledon.

Murray and Williams have put in a request for a wildcard into the tournament draw, which is expected to be forthcoming from the All England Club.

It has echoes of the previous high-profile partnership in the event between Andy Murray and Serena Williams.

The older of the Williams sisters, now 42, last played on the WTA Tour in August last year and has been on the sidelines since then with a leg injury.

She turned heads when she returned to practice at Aorangi Park at the weekend. She had not requested a wildcard for the women’s singles, with her sole focus on lining up in the mixed doubles with the older of the two Murray brothers.

Kyle Edmund, who similarly has had a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injury, will also use the mixed doubles for a comeback of sorts alongside Olivia Nicholls. The former British No1 has been doubling up as a practice partner for Andy Murray already this week.
