Venezuelan migrants have identified Mexico as the most challenging part of their journey to the U.S. border, surpassing even the perilous jungle trek through Colombia and Panama. Mexico's recent immigration crackdown, influenced by the Biden administration, has particularly impacted Venezuelans, underscoring the crucial role Mexico plays in controlling migration amid record-high levels.

Arrests of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally have decreased this year, with a significant drop observed among Venezuelans. Mexico's strategy of keeping migrants closer to its border with Guatemala has provided temporary relief for U.S. authorities.

The influx of Venezuelans into the U.S. surged in 2021, with many flying to Mexico and then traveling on foot or by bus after visa restrictions were imposed. Mexico's measures have included relocating migrants, flying some back to Venezuela, and offering financial assistance to deported individuals to deter their return.

Migrants report facing challenges in Mexico, including paying bribes at government checkpoints to avoid being sent back to southern cities. Despite the obstacles, over 500,000 migrants have used the CBP One app to enter the U.S. at land crossings since its launch in January 2023.

Venezuelans constitute the majority of migrants crossing the Darien Gap, reflecting ongoing turmoil in their home country. While some migrants express concerns about criminal activities along their route, others emphasize the hope for a better future in the U.S.

Both Mexican and U.S. officials acknowledge the complexities of the situation, with Mexico receiving praise for its efforts to curb illegal crossings. However, challenges persist for migrants navigating through Mexico, with many enduring hardships while awaiting their turn to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

Despite facing adversity, some migrants remain determined to reach the U.S., driven by the promise of a new beginning. The journey is fraught with risks and uncertainties, but for many, the potential rewards outweigh the challenges.
