Vauxhall Motors knocked out of the FA Vase after penalties heartbreak

Mick McGraa’s Vauxhall Motors were defeated on penalties by Emley AFC in the FA Vase Second Qualifying Round after the ninety minutes ended with a 1-1 scoreline.

In the opening minutes, the visitors were close to getting themselves in front but a great save from McClenaghan meant that the ball struck the post and the scoreline remained level.

After claims for a Motors penalty were frustratingly dismissed, they soon put themselves in front with a fantastic free kick by Michael Burkey which rifled into the net.

There were a couple of chances for either side following the goal being scored as the game started to open up. Sean Moscrop’s effort was well saved before the Emley chance went just wide.

However, it would be the visitors that scored the next goal as an emphatic header from the captain Dominic Riordan levelled the tie after McClenaghan kept his side in the lead with another fantastic save.

There were very few chances created in the second half as Bobbie McDonnell was replaced by Francois Antoine just past the hour mark.

Tempers soon flared and a yellow card was dished out to Motors’ Ben Dufton-Kelly and goalscorer Burkey, Smith was on the receiving end for the visitors’ yellow as he clashed with the forward.

Emley were close to winning the tie in the last minute as Gooden smashed the ball into the side netting.

However, with the game level and the tie needing to be won on the day, the game went to penalties. Emley AFC won 4-1 as Moscrop and Jordan Deer both missed from the spot for the hosts.
