Vauxhall car erupts into flames in public car park after 'accidental ignition'

Dramatic footage of a Vauxhall car shows it erupting into flames in a busy car park in Derry.

Passerby, Mark Walmsley caught the shocking moment after he was dropping his son off at work past on Sunday, June 5.

The footage shows bright orange flames engulfing the vehicle, with clouds of black smoke also billowing from the car at Crescent Link Retail Park.

Multiple cars can be seen parked near the vehicle - some receiving damage - as spectators watch from afar.

At one point, the fire became so vigorous that the tyres exploded causing everyone to move further back, according to Mr Walmsley.

Speaking to MyDerry, he said that staff from nearby businesses in the area tried to put the fire out themselves before the fire service arrived.

"I was dropping son off at work close to the incident ad the car was already in flames," Mark said.

"Maybe it's just me but it took ages for the fire brigade to come, surprising as the station is only a mile up the road.

"I believe the car was burning for at least 15 minutes, and the tyres exploded which made everyone back off. Someone had actually told me that staff from shops had tried to put the fire out before I arrived.

"This was all happening as traffic was still trying to get into the retail park."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire Service said the cause of the fire had been due to an "accidental ignition".

Two fire appliances in total, from stations in Crescent Link and Magherafelt, were deployed to the scene.

The spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to reports of a car on fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used 2 hose reels to extinguish the fire.

"The incident was dealt with by 2.08pm and the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental ignition."

Police said that no injuries were reported from the fire, but a number of other cars had received fire damage.

"We received two reports of a car on fire in the Crescent Link area of the city at around 1:50pm yesterday, Sunday, 5th June," said Inspector Swann.

"Officers attended the scene where the NIFRS extinguished the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, however, substantial damage was caused to the vehicle.

“A number of other vehicles parked in the area sustained damage as a result of the blaze which, at this time, has been ruled as accidental.”
