A top Vatican cardinal has called on European voters to remember their migratory roots and show compassion towards those who are forced to flee their homes. Cardinal Michael Czerny, who is Pope Francis' point person on migration, emphasized the importance of understanding the plight of migrants ahead of the upcoming European Parliament election where migration is a key issue.
Speaking at the launch of the pope's annual message for migrants, Cardinal Czerny highlighted the theme of God's presence in every Christian's faith journey and the divine accompaniment of people on the move. He cautioned against the prevalent fear, ideology, and propaganda surrounding migration, stating that the perceived 'global crisis' is often exaggerated.
Cardinal Czerny urged Europeans to acknowledge their own migratory heritage, noting that many Europeans are descendants of people who were once on the move. He lamented the tendency for families to forget their own migration stories and the assistance they received, calling on current generations to extend a helping hand to those in need.
Pope Francis has consistently advocated for a welcoming and inclusive approach towards migrants, urging countries to protect, promote, and integrate them. However, the cardinal acknowledged the political exploitation of anti-migrant sentiments in Europe, particularly in countries like Italy where migration is a contentious issue during election campaigns.
Referencing biblical narratives such as the exodus of Jews and the parable of the Good Samaritan, Cardinal Czerny appealed to Europeans to demonstrate Christian charity towards migrants. He emphasized that under similar circumstances, anyone could find themselves in a position of having to leave their home in search of safety and security.
Meanwhile, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni is set to visit Albania to inspect migrant detention centers established by Italy as part of an agreement to process asylum claims outside its borders. Meloni's visit comes amidst ongoing debates on migration policies and efforts to deter risky Mediterranean crossings.
