Channel 4's 'Wagatha Christie' drama, Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama, was always going to get people talking. The two-parter, which stars Welsh actor Michael Sheen, retells the real-life case of Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy.
In 2019, Rooney accused Vardy of leaking stories about her to British tabloid newspaper The Sun in the now infamous, "It's... Rebekah Vardy," Twitter post. After a well-publicised trial, Vardy failed in her attempts to sue Rooney for defamation. You can read more about what happened here.
Following the release of the first episode of the new drama, viewers took to social media to share their thoughts. Whilst there was some praise for the retelling of events, a proportion of people took issue with it - In particular, actress Chanel Cresswell's portrayal of Coleen Rooney, Liverpool Echo reports. The internet was flooded with comments on Cresswell's attempt at a Liverpudlian accent. "Vardy v Rooney Lasted 3 seconds hearing that awful attempt at a Scouse accent….," wrote one person. A second added: "Seriously who thought she could do a scouse accent. The whole of Liverpool has second hand embarrassment right now"
"That attempt at the Scouse accent is awful," said another. Some viewers even threatened to switch off, with one person saying: "Don’t know if I can sit through the awful attempt at a scouse accent."
Elsewhere, people suggested that another actress should have been cast. "You would think they would have cast Coleen Rooney with a Liverpool actor. Not like there isn’t enough of them. Plus the accent is dreadful," said one person. A second agreed, writing: I’m sure Coleen Rooney will be made up with the actress she got! What’s with the accent? Why didn’t they just get a scouser." A third added: "I am like a min into vardy v rooney thing and her accent."
Whilst there was some criticism about the drama, viewers were quick to praise Welsh actor Michael Sheen, who plays celebrity barrister David Sherborne. Of his performance, one person wrote: "Really good so far. Michael Sheen well watchable". Read more about that here.
