VAR cancels red card in minute of mayhem as Bayern vs Man City threatens to boil over

Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano had a red card cancelled by VAR as the Champions League clash at Allianz Arena produced 60 seconds of chaos.

With the score at 0-0, Manchester City's first real chance was seemingly fashioned when Erling Haaland went through on goal, only to be hauled down by the defender. Referee Clement Turpin immediately issued a straight red card, with home manager Thomas Tuchel booked for protesting.

But as Upamecano was getting his marching orders, the assistant referee flagged for offside. Sure enough, VAR then deemed then confirmed the official was right, and Turpin was forced to rescind the red card.

Tempers continued to fray though when City were awarded a penalty, and again Upamecano was deemed the offender after handling in the area, and this time the decision did stand with the Frenchman booked. But following a lengthy wait amid player protests and an object being thrown onto the pitch, Haaland astonishingly blazed over from 12 yards.

Despite many fans and pundits deeming the tie to be over with City leading 3-0 from the first leg, the atmosphere was raucous throughout the first half and the emotion spilled onto the pitch. Cancelo and Joshua Kimmich were also booked for the home side while Ederson and Ilkay Gundogan saw yellow for City.

The first half eventually finished goalless, but only after another melee between the player in injury time. That came after a goalmouth scramble in the City box, which culminated in Kingsley Coman having a sho§t blocked by his own player.

Should City hold on, they will face Real Madrid in the final four. But Pep Guardiola will want a more composed second half in Munich after the high octane antics of the first 45 minutes.
