Vantage Data Centers has further expanded its Cardiff data centre campus - one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe. The US provider of hyperscale data centres has completed a 12WM (megawatt) first phase of a second 40 MW facility - known as Vantage CWL 13 which will be developed out subject to customer demand.
It also has plans for a third data centre investment at its 46-acre campus in the Wentloog area of the capital. Once fully developed the site will provide 186,000 sq ft of 184 MW data centre facilities. The campus operates entirely on renewable energy sources. Data centre are used by companies and organisations to store, process and manage large amounts of data.
Vantage said its new facility in Cardiff boasts one of the lowest power usage effectiveness (PUE) ratios across all of its facilities. This is said is thanks in part to its energy efficient indirect evaporative free cooling system, which negates the need for compressors in the cooling cycle.
The campus offers numerous connectivity options with low latency between Wales and London of less than 1.5 millisecond.
Vantage’s chief operating office for the UK and Europe, Justin Jenkins, said “We are delighted to welcome customers to our newest data centre in Cardiff “The significant investment Vantage is making in Wales is transforming the area into one of Europe’s leading data centre hubs and a top cloud region in the UK. This is great news for the local economy as the added capacity will attract more global companies to the region, ensuring additional work for hundreds of local contractors on site and creating new permanent job opportunities.”
Vantage acquired the Cardiff campus from InfraVia Capital Partners and two founders of what was previously known as Next Generation Data in 2020.
Vantage has also announced it is investing £500m in a 48MW data centre campus in London. Located on nearly five acres (two hectares) in Acton, the campus will total 430,000 sq ft across two 24MW multi-storey data centres once fully developed. It will mark Vantage’s 11th campus in Europe the Middle East and Africa.
