Vanishing Point star who played Kowalski in cult classic Barry Newman dies

Barry Newman has died aged 92, it has been announced.

The actor - best known for his role in Vanishing Point (1971) - is said to have died of natural causes on May 11 at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

He had a decades-long acting career in both TV and film, and he will be most remembered for his role as the car delivery driver Kowalski in the action film Vanishing Point.

The acclaimed actor is also known for having played lawyer Tony Petrocelli in several projects and appeared in films such as Salzburg Connection (1972) and Daylight (1996).

The news of Barry's death was shared by his wife Angela to The Hollywood Reporter. She paid tribute to her late husband in a statement that was given to the outlet.

She described him as "a rock for so many people, whose spirit he lifted and allowed to be free". She added: "He was truly a light for so many, with an incredible, hilarious sense of humor that lit everything and everyone up."

Barry is best known for having played car delivery driver Kowalski, who ends up being chased by police, in Vanishing Point. The film has been referred to as a "cult classic".

Steven Spielberg once told Entertainment Weekly that it had been one of his favourite films. It's also said to have inspired Primal Scream's album Vanishing Point (1997).

The actor is also known for having played attorney Anthony 'Tony' Petrocelli on screen, initially in the film The Lawyer (1970), before reprising the role in Night Games (1974).

He later returned as the character once again when he starred in the NBC series Petrocelli. The legal drama ran for two seasons from 1974 until its final episode aired in 1976.

His performance in the show earned him an Emmy Award nomination in 1975. And the following year, Barry was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the role.

Barry's other credits include roles in films like Salzburg Connection (1972), City on Fire (1979) and Daylight (1996) and The Limey (1999). He was also in Murder She Wrote in 1989.

His more recent credits include playing a professor in a few episodes of The O.C. in 2005 as well as appearing in both The Cleaner and Ghost Whisperer back in 2009.

Barry had also been a stage actor, having made his acting debut in the play Nature's Way. He's credited as having also been in Maybe Tuesday, Night Live and America Hurrah.

He is also said to have starred in the New York production of Agatha Christie renowned play The Mousetrap and had a role in the musical the musical What Makes Sammy Run.
