Vandals smash up Johnstone church causing thousands of pounds worth of damage

Reckless vandals targeted a former place of worship in Renfrewshire and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Police in Johnstone were made aware of damage being inflicted upon the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Campbell Street.

Officers say that windows were smashed and the interior of the building was left in a sorry state after the vandals caused “extensive damage”.

They estimate it will cost thousands of pounds to repair what has been damaged.

It’s not yet known the precise day the now-derelict church was vandalised – but police are working on the assumption that it was at some point between Wednesday, April 19 and Wednesday, May 10.

And officers are seeking the support of the public in identifying those responsible for the damage as they issued an appeal for information.

Inspector Lorna McLaren told the Paisley Daily Express: “Police attended a report of vandalism at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Campbell Street, Johnstone which is currently derelict.

“The damage has been caused between April 19 and May 10.

“We are appealing to anyone that may have witnessed the property being damaged and request if you have any information to contact 101 quoting incident number 1478 of May 10, 2023.”
