A former council office could be demolished after it became subject to anti-social behaviour and vandalism. The former housing office for Newark and Sherwood District Council is in a “state of disrepair”, council documents stated.
Now, there are plans to demolish the building in Eton Avenue, Newark, which was first closed two years ago due to the pandemic. The building was used to provide housing services in the local area in Newark.
Council documents stated: “Due to the length of time the property has been empty it is now in a state of disrepair. “The site has also become subject to vandalism and anti-social behaviour, which has resulted in a number of the windows being boarded up.”
Councillor Laurence Goff, who represents the Devon ward for Labour, said: “We’ve had trouble with vandalism and fly-tipping around there and this will hopefully prevent that in the future. It isn’t a very big building so it wasn’t ideal for people during the pandemic.
“Everything is done online now so most people pay their rent via direct debit. As long as people can use other facilities I have no qualms about it.
“Nobody has contacted me about anti-social behaviour but I am always happy to hear concerns from residents.” The application by Newark and Sherwood District Council will now be considered by members of the planning committee at the authority.
