Vice President JD Vance told a crowd of anti-abortion activists at a rally Friday in Washington, D.C., "I want more babies."
"We failed a generation not only by permitting a culture of abortion on demand, but also by neglecting to help young parents achieve the ingredients they need to lead a happy and meaningful life," he said at the annual March for Life rally, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
The Catholic blamed a "culture of radical individualism" for convincing people to view the "responsibilities and joys" of rearing children as obstacles.
"Our society has failed to recognize the obligation that one generation has to another as a core part of living in a society," the vice president said to cheers in the speech at the National Mall. "So let me say very simply, I want more babies in the United States of America."
President Donald Trump addressed the rally in a pre-recorded video message.
Vance, a former Republican senator from Ohio who was sworn into office on Monday, has three children with his wife, Usha Vance: Ewan, 7, Vivek, 4, and Mirabel, 2.
He talked about the joys of being a parent.
"Each time Usha and I welcomed our own children into the world, we saw firsthand the indescribable beauty of new life," he said.
"Watching all three of our kids grow, learn and become who they are today has been the single greatest blessing of our lives," Vance added.
"I want more happy children in our country," he said, "And it is the task of our government to make it easier for young moms and dads to afford to have kids, to bring them into the world and to welcome them as the blessings that they are."
