Van Der Valk full cast and locations as second series continues

The reboot of Van der Valk (the original aired in the 70s) has returned to ITV. This evening sees the continuation of its second episode which lasts for two hours starting at 8pm. There are three episodes in total.

After a lengthy hiatus following the first seasons finale in May 2020, the second series began last Sunday, August 7, and will finish next Sunday, August 21. Van der Valk follows a Dutch detective Piet Van der Valk as he takes on criminal cases in Amsterdam using his quick thinking, 'street smarts' and observational skills. Marc Warren leads the cast with Maimie McCoy by his side playing Lucienne Hassell.

In last week's episode, the pair were called in to investigate the gruesome murder of a solicitor. Episode two, as stated by Radio Times, "unfolds inside the world of diamonds" where the body of diamond polisher Ahmed Baykam is discovered cut into three pieces. The third and final instalment sees Van der Valk and Lucienne investigate an acid attack in Amsterdam's music scene. And while the gripping murder mystery storylines will have you hooked, you may be left gawping, too, at the series’ stunning locations. But where, exactly, is it filmed? Read on to find out...

Where is Van Der Valk season 2 filmed?

Staying true to the storyline's setting and protagonist's nationality, the second series, like the first, is set in Amsterdam and shot in the canal-filled Venice of the North alongside other locations in the Netherlands including Dutch cities Utrecht and The Hague, which acted as replica for Amsterdam in some scenes.

Speaking of filming in the Dutch city, screenwriter Chris Murray told iNews: “The city has given birth to nearly all the episodes." But of filming in other Dutch locations, he added: "Amsterdam is quite difficult to film in. The canal-lined streets are quite narrow, and it’s hard to get permission to get a production crew in for long, so we look further afield to find places that are more accessible.”

Iconic landmarks and locations are sure to be or have been spotted by viewers as they dive into Van Der Valk's second series. The Amsterdam Canal Belt, Scheveningen Pier - which extends into the North Sea, near The Hague - the Muziekgebouw, a glass and concrete concert hall that can be found in the Eastern Docklands, the A'DAM Tower and the renowned Café Scheltema all get air time as well as lesser known spots like the regenerated docklands.

"We were keen to reflect a different side of the city that an international audience might not know so well," Chris said.

Who is in the Van Der Valk series 2 cast?

The main cast from season 1 of Van der Valk will be returning for season 2 with English actor Marc Warren, 55, whose previous roles have included Albert Blithe in Band of Brothers, Danny Blue in Hustle and the Comte DE Rochefort in The Musketeers, reprising his role as Piet van der Valk.

Maimie McCoy returns as Lucienne Hassell. Luke Allen-Gale plays Brad de Vries, Elliot Barnes-Worrell will be Job Cloovers, Darrell D'Silva plays Hendrik Davie and Emma Fielding as Julia Dahlman.

When did Van der Valk season 2 air on ITV?

The second series began airing last Sunday 7th August at 8pm in an episode entitled Plague in Amsterdam.

The second episode will air tonight, Sunday, August 14, at 8pm and is called Blood in Amsterdam.

Once aired, the episodes will be available to view on ITV Hub.
