The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes looks a breeze for WEST WIND BLOWS (3.00) on Thursday.
Simon and Ed Crisford’s runner has only been beaten once in four starts and that came in the Derby. Although he finished in midfield at Epsom, he didn’t run at all badly.
He was caught a bit too wide early on and he also sat closer to the strong pace than ideal. It was no surprise to see him weaken in the closing stages but he lasted longer than he was entitled to.
The opposition was, obviously, nowhere near as strong for the Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton two weeks ago but the way he drew clear for a seven-length victory was mightily impressive. The hood he wore for his first three starts was taken off that day and it clearly had a positive effect.
Have 2pts to win at 6-1.
SHAMLAAN (4.45) beat Sir Henry Cotton over this track and trip in April. That’s good form and he hasn’t had things go his way in four runs since.
He didn’t get a lot of room to play with at Chester a couple of weeks ago and I’m not sure he’s suited to that track. His earlier third at Sandown was much more like it and he’s fared better with the draw today than he did at Royal Ascot.
Have 1pt each-way at 10-1. There’s four places up for grabs but Sky Bet are stretching to five.
MISS JUNGLE CAT (4.10) kept good company in a couple of starts after making a successful debut at Musselburgh in April. Her Pontefract third has worked out really well and she was taking on some smart horses when down the field behind Lezoo in a Newmarket Listed prize last month.
She won a York nursery without much fuss on her handicap debut three weeks ago and the step up to 7f for the first time should help Karl Burke’s filly winkle out more improvement.
Have 1pt each-way at 10-1.
Most bookies are paying out on four places with Sky Bet going five.
