After roughing it in the Kangaroo Island wilderness for 529 days, Valerie the mini dachshund was found and rescued by conservationists on Friday.
In a post published to Facebook, Kangala Wildlife Rescue — the group focused on Valerie’s capture — stated that they were “overjoyed” to see Valerie’s capture. Released CCTV footage saw the canine crunching on some food, placed inside of a trap built to capture Valerie.

“Kangala Wildlife Rescue is overjoyed to announce the successful rescue of Valerie, the [miniature] dachshund who went missing on Kangaroo Island 529 days ago,” the post read.
“After weeks of tireless efforts by Kangala Wildlife Rescue volunteers and partner organisations Valerie has been safely rescued and is fit and well.
“We are absolutely thrilled and deeply relieved that Valerie is finally safe and able to begin her transition back to her loving parents, Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock.”
Rescue efforts for Valerie first began in November 2023, when Valerie escaped from her pen in an attempt to reunite with her owners who were at the beach. She had been spotted around the island multiple times over the last few months, but the pup remained an elusive force — until now.

“This rescue was a true testament to the dedication and perseverance of our team, the unwavering support of the community, and the power of collaboration,” Kangala Wildlife Rescue’s post continued.
“There were many challenging moments over the past month, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who played a part in bringing Valerie home.
“The search for Valerie involved over 1000 volunteer hours and more than 5000km travelled by volunteers in their private vehicles, the deployment and monitoring of numerous cameras and traps and the use of various forms of technology to successfully secure Valerie while ensuring her physical and psychological welfare.”
Valerie has not yet been reunited with her doting owners, Georgia and Josh, although we can safely assume that all parties are itching to be in each other’s company once again.
We love a happy ending!!
