Valerie James dead: Tributes pour in for Carry On legend Sid James' wife

Valerie James, the wife of Carry On star Sid James, has sadly passed away at the age of 93.

Her family released a statement on social media alongside a beautiful black-and-white photo of the couple. It read: "In very sad news, Valerie James, lovely wife of Sid and a performer in her own right in her early days, has died aged 93.

"Val and Sid’s family have given me their blessing to post this and I'm sure you will all join me in sending them the very best of wishes." Val's cause of death has yet to be revealed. Valerie and Sid were married for 23 years prior to his death in 1976.

Following the news, many fans took to social media to share their own messages of condolence. One user on Twitter wrote: "She's back with Sid now. Such a devoted wife. RIP Valerie and Sid James."

Another penned: "Hugs to both Valerie and Sid James Family. Sid James was a big part of my childhood onscreen via the #CarryOn Films and gave me so many laughs and still does to this day, so Thankyou. Both of them have now been reunited in heaven. RIP Sid & Valerie."

A third said: "Sad news indeed. I'd have loved to have met her in person, I bet she had many anecdotes about her and Sid's life together that'd be great to hear. My heartfelt condolences to her family." And a fourth commented: "Condolences to the remaining family. She was a lovely, smart and patient woman."

Sid and Valerie first started dating in 1950 before tying the knot two years later. Valerie had a successful career of her own and featured alongside her husband on The Sid James Show. It's understood that the final years of their marriage were spent living in Buckinghamshire, just a stone's throw away from Pinewood Studios.

They shared two kids together - daughter Sue, who became a television producer and son Steve who carved a career as a music producer.
