Val McDermid cheers on former Raith Rovers women's team after they rebranded in wake of David Goodwillie signing

Crime writer Val McDermid showed her support to the the breakaway Raith Rovers women's team today after they renamed their side in her honour following controversial David Goodwillie signing.

The squad, now known as McDermid Ladies, played their first match under their new moniker this afternoon with Val cheering them on from the side lines.

The female squad cut ties with the Fife club after they signed striker David Goodwillie, who was ruled to have raped a woman by a civil court in 2017.

In wake of Goodwillie's appointment to the club from Clyde on an 18-month contract Club directors and staff stepped down.

McDermid, who has a stand named after her at Raith Rovers' Stark's Park in recognition of her service to the club, withdrew support in the hours after the Goodwillie signing.

Women's captain Tayler Rattray also stepped down.

In a tweet, she said: "After 10 long years playing for Raith, it's gutting I have given up now because they have signed someone like this and I want nothing to do with it!

"It was good being captain of Raith while it lasted."
