'Vacancies in the circus' say Nottingham readers as Boris Johnson to resign

Nottinghamshire Live and Nottingham Post readers have had their say as Prime Minister Boris Johnson looks set to make a statement to the country detailing his resignation. Just two and a half years after Mr Johnson won an 80-seat majority his tumultuous reign will soon come to an end.

The Chris Pincher scandal was the latest in a series of damning crises at Downing Street and indeed the final nail in the coffin for the PM who had, so far, managed to cling to power. The grip began to slip further however upon chancellor Rushi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid's resignations on July 6.

Mr Johnson is expected to take to the lectern on July 7 to make a statement of his resignation as Conservative Party leader. He could remain in power as PM for some time longer however.

Despite surviving a no-confidence vote but a few weeks prior upon the publication of the Sue Gray 'Partygate' report, his leadership has finally come crumbling down. Nottinghamshire Live readers have taken to Facebook to express their thoughts.

Carol Joseph says: "Bye, there's vacancies in the circus."

Wile Loretta Jenkinson adds: "Isn't it time to have a new party in power? Cameron, May, Boris. That's rather concerning."

Lesley Woulds however sought to stick behind a PM encapsulated in controversy after controversy. He said: "So sad. Boris was a good leader. So he made a few mistakes, he was under so much pressure, he’s been hounded by his own party. Shame on them. Good luck Boris to you and your family for the future."

A leadership contest, with figures such as Liz Truss, Dominic Raab, Steve Baker or Rushi Sunak, to name but a few, is now likely. Mr Johnson could stay on until the Autumn, but some Tories and his opposition state this is simply not sustainable.

Some readers argue a general election should be called. Jake Davenport says, in his opinion, "we should get a general election".

And another reader, Ian Spinks, said he would be voting for the Jedi council in the future. But whatever happens one thing is certain: The Government, and the country, has been left reeling from months upon months of uncertainty, scandal and turbulence.
