Uvalde shooting: Texas school where 21 people killed to be demolished

A Texas elementary school where 21 people were shot and killed is to be demolished.

In May, Salvador Ramos stormed Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, south western Texas, gunning down 19 children and two teachers.

The deaths have devastated the community and there have been calls for the school to be closed down and destroyed.

Confirming the school’s demolition, mayor of Uvalde, Don McLaughlin said: “You can never ask a child to go back or teacher to go back in that school, ever.”

Mr McLaughlin said there was no timeline for the demolition.

It comes just hours after a public safety chief said there were enough police on the scene to have stopped Ramos three minutes after he entered the building.

Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told a Senate hearing that the police response to the mass shooting was an “abject failure”.

He also said “terrible decisions” were made by the on-scene commander.

Police waited for more than an hour outside classrooms before a Border Force entered and killed the gunman.

Mr McCraw said: “The officers had weapons, the children had none. The officers had body armour, the children had none. The officers had training, the subject had none.

“One hour, 14 minutes, and eight seconds - that is how long the children waited, and the teachers waited, in Room 111 to be rescued.”

“Three minutes after the subject entered the west building, there was a sufficient number of armed officers wearing body armour to isolate, distract and neutralise the subject.”
