Uttar Pradesh: Samajwadi Party MLA Nahid Hasan walks out of Chitrakoot jail

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party MLA Nahid Hasan was released from Chitrakoot jail on Saturday — two days ahead of the winter session of UP Assembly. Nahid is yet to take oath as an MLA.

Nahid walked out of jail around 9am but did not talk to the waiting mediapersons. His sister Iqrar Hasan allegedly snatched the mobile of a reporter who was making a video of the MLA coming out of the jail. Her security personnel returned the mobile after deleting the video.

After his release, the MLA left for Lucknow by road along with his supporters. He is expected to attend the Assembly’s winter session and take oath as an MLA.

Nahid contested the assembly elections from jail and was elected from the Kairana seat in Shamli district. He was arrested before the UP Assembly elections under the Gangster Act.

On November 30, the Allahabad high court had granted conditional bail to Nahid which paved the way for his release. While granting bail, Justice Krishan Pahal had said Nahid Hasan would not intimidate the witnesses and cooperate with the police in the investigation.

A jail official said that out of 18 cases lodged against him, Nahid had got bail in 17 cases from lower courts and for the one lodged under the Gangster Act, he had approached the high court.

In February 2021, a case was registered against 40 people, including Nahid Hasan and his mother and former MP Tabassum Begum under the Gangster Act in Kairana. Nahid was arrested on January 15 this year and was lodged in Muzaffarnagar jail.

In September, he was shifted to Chitrakoot Jail by the administration.
