MIAMI - In a year already filled with major developments for Gloria Estefan, including big screen adaptations and stage revivals of her play "On Your Feet" about her life and husband Emilio Estefan, the Cuban-American artist is now celebrating a unique honor.
The U.S. Navy has announced the naming of its new nuclear submarine, the USS Miami, as a tribute to Estefan during the Fleet Week festivities in the city.
Carlos del Toro, Secretary of the Navy, made the announcement, emphasizing the submarine's capabilities in both combat and intelligence missions." Let the tradition and celebration continue!" said the Cuban born artist during the inaugural concert of Fleet Week in Miami, which was produced by Emilio Estefan.
The title of sponsor is honorary and does not involve any financial commitment on Estefan's part. However, it does allow her to participate in ceremonies and events related to the submarine, representing not only the Miami community but also the broader Cuban diaspora in the United States.
The USS Miami is the second vessel in U.S. history to bear the name, succeeding an earlier submarine with a storied past. The first USS Miami was involved in a significant incident when a fire broke out during a scheduled overhaul in 2012, leading to its decommissioning in 2014 due to budget cuts.

At the opening of Fleet Week 2024, Del Toro, who shares Cuban heritage with the Estefans, highlighted the shared cultural ties the Navy has with Miami and the immigrant community at the event.

More than 3,000 members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard are in Miami for Fleet Week, experiencing the rich mix of culture and history the city offers.
The event featured several major naval vessels, including the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and other significant ships like the USS Bataan, USS Normandy, and USS Leyte Gulf, all docked at Port Miami for public visits.
