USMNT make major decision on Chelsea star Christian Pulisic day before World Cup opener vs Wales

Chelsea star Christian Pulisic will not captain his national team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 24-year-old winger is the star player for United States Men's National Team (USMNT) but won't be wearing the armband when his side kick off their tournament against Wales on Monday night.

Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams is the new pick for Greg Berhalter after a squad vote for the role earlier in the year. At 23 he is the youngest USMNT team captain for over 70 years having made his debut as a teenager five years ago.

Adams has played 32 times for his country whereas Pulisic has 52 caps - scoring 21 times - and the attacker has captained his team intermittently since 2018. He has worn the armband 12 times whereas Adams has only done so on one ocassion going into the tournament.

Pulisic has largely been a bit-part player this season for Chelsea having pushed for a move away from Stamford Bridge over the summer and the competition is a chance for him to not only pick up form part way through the season but also to put himself in the shop window ahead of the January transfer market.

The forward has just over 18-months left on his contract heading into 2023 and has been able to produce consistently more for his country than for Chelsea since joining in 2019 and has been used as a makeshift wingback under Graham Potter since he took over in September.
