In a recent interview on 'Club Shay Shay,' R&B superstar Usher opened up about a missed opportunity that could have changed the music industry forever. The 45-year-old singer revealed that he, along with JAY-Z, Diddy, and Pharrell Williams, had plans to form a music supergroup, but unfortunately, those plans never materialized.
Usher shared this surprising revelation when asked about collaborations that should have happened. He admitted that the idea of a supergroup involving him, JAY-Z, Pharrell, and Diddy was indeed in the works. However, he confessed that they 'just got caught up in the moment' and the project never came to fruition.
The four talented artists have a history of working together. Usher and Diddy go back to the '90s when they first crossed paths. Usher has collaborated with Pharrell on tracks like 'U Don't Have to Call,' and with JAY-Z on 'Hot Tottie.' JAY-Z and Pharrell, too, have teamed up on hits like 'Excuse Me Miss' and 'Frontin'.' The chemistry between them was evident, but somehow the distractions proved too much for the supergroup to solidify their plans.
'It's one of those things that I wish had happened,' Usher admitted during the interview. 'We were even having secret meetings and discussing music, talking about how we would flip the game and the business side of things. But somewhere along the way, we got distracted, and it just never happened.'
The disappointment of missing out on collaborations doesn't end there for Usher. He also revealed that he regrets not being a part of the 2006 film Dreamgirls. Directed by Bill Condon and featuring a star-studded cast including Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy, and Anika Noni Rose, the film received critical acclaim, earning two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes.
Usher disclosed that music mogul David Geffen reached out to him for a role in the movie, and although he had conversations with industry heavyweights like Eddie Murphy and Brandy about it, he eventually passed on the opportunity.
When asked by host Shannon Sharpe if he turned down the role himself, Usher simply replied, 'I didn't do it.' Although fans may wonder about the reasons behind his decision, the singer didn't offer any further explanation.
Despite these missed chances, Usher now has something exciting on his horizon. Football enthusiasts can look forward to his highly anticipated performance at the Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show on February 11. It marks Usher's first Super Bowl performance and Roc Nation's fifth halftime show under its NFL partnership.
Usher shared that JAY-Z, whom he referred to as his 'big homie,' personally called him to congratulate him on this milestone. He expressed his gratitude for the support and mentioned that JAY-Z said, ''It's time, it's magic time. You know, it's time for you to have that moment.'' Usher couldn't contain his excitement and quickly accepted the opportunity.
As fans eagerly anticipate his spectacular halftime show, they can't help but reflect on the missed collaborations and opportunities that could have reshaped the music landscape. Nevertheless, Usher's resilience and talent continue to shine as he prepares to enthral audiences worldwide with his electrifying performance on the biggest stage of all.
