'Useless rule' - Tottenham fans react as Hugo Lloris Leicester penalty save ruled out by VAR

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris turned from hero to villain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday after his penalty heroics were overturned. It got Antonio Conte's men off to the worst possible start as they looked to respond to their first loss of the season in midweek.

That was against Sporting CP in the Champions League, where two injury-time goals gave the Portuguese side all three points from the game. Conte asked for his side to show something different when they come up against the Foxes, saying ahead of the game: "You know very well that we have to try in every game to get a win.

"This has to be our reality, and for this reason, you have to understand that when we lose, we are totally in the opposite side. And for this reason, we have to feel, we have to be a bit angry, and to try and have a good reaction. Because now we have the possibility to play another game in the Premier League, and for us, it's important to get a win, but at the same time, you know you're playing against Leicester.

"The table at the moment is not faithful to them because we are talking about a really good team, a really good squad. We are talking about Brendan Rodgers, who is a really good manager who won a lot in his career. For this reason, we have to pay great attention."

Said attention wasn't paid in the opening minutes, though, as Davinson Sanchez tripped James Justin on the edge of the area, eventually given as a spot kick. Youri Tielemans stepped up, and his first effort was saved well by the low dive of Lloris to his right.

However, after a VAR check, the Frenchman was clearly encroaching off of his goal line, and it had to be retaken. On the second attempt, the Belgian midfielder made no mistake of burying his effort to take the lead.

Tottenham fans took to social media to vent their frustration from a tough start to the match.

@COYSTom1: "Wasn't even in the box, and it's somehow TWO penalties, lol."

@shalaby_bido: "Most useless rule ever. They should scrap it. He barely came off the line."

@Serpent_King_10: "This is a joke."

@ZthfcK: "That's really never a pen."

@IanKelly1987: "Ridiculous rule."
