USC QB Caleb Williams won’t work out or throw at scouting combine

USC quarterback Caleb Williams is the consensus top quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft despite a strong push from guys like UNC’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels. The NFL scouting combine starts on Tuesday and Williams is hedging his bets and will not work out or throw.

Williams is planning to do a full workout and throw at his pro day, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport. This isn’t an uncommon practice for top quarterbacks, especially if their hold on their draft spot is somewhat tenuous and they want to be sure every look NFL teams get of them in the offseason is controlled and scripted.

Williams has drawn comparisons to players like Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes with his ability to elevate the play of his teammates and a knack for turning something ordinary into something spectacular. Williams isn’t without his criticisms as he struggled against top competition during his time in college football.

The Chicago Bears currently hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. If they choose to trade away quarterback Justin Fields, Williams immediately becomes a top candidate for Chicago.
