Tyler Adams captains the USA for tonight’s World Cup meeting with Wales.
The Leeds midfielder has surprisingly been handed the armband ahead of Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic, long since established as his country’s leading soccer star, after winning a squad vote on the eve of the tournament.
Adams is the youngest USA World Cup captain for some 72 years, with America back at the tournament after failing to qualify in 2018 for the first time since 1986.

Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie is fit for Gregg Berhalter’s side after suffering a quad injury that has kept him out of Serie A action in the build-up, with Barcelona full-back Sergino Dest also ready after dealing with fatigue in his last match for loan club AC Milan.
Arsenal’s Matt Turner is set to start in goal for the USA at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, with the defence likely featuring Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Celtic centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Adams’ Leeds team-mate Brenden Aaronson should lead the attack along with Pulisic and the Colombian-born Jesus Ferreira, with teenage Valencia midfielder Yunus Musah a real player to watch at this tournament.
USA starting XI to face Wales (4-3-3): Turner; Robinson, Ream, Zimmerman, Dest; Adams, McKennie, Musah; Pulisic, Sargan, Weah.
